Elders Group Activities

Every year, the Asian Welfare and Cultural Association coordinate a range of events to engage with the local community.
Exercise Sessions
Members of the AWCA have taken part in two six week introductory exercise programmes delivered by an Active Lifestyles instructor at Fleming Park, in Eastleigh. Those who took part enjoyed the sessions and reported improvements in their health and mobility.

English Sessions / IT Sessions
Some of the AWCA ladies have taken part in beginners English language sessions. Subjects covered included: names and addresses, numbers, British history, amongst others. All of the ladies enjoyed the sessions, which improved their confidence, in both speaking and reading English.

Some of the members have also accessed beginner IT sessions, where they had an introduction to using Microsoft Outlook and Word.

Visits to local schools
The AWCA ladies have visited local Eastleigh schools to take part in the schools' "India Project" where the school children were learning about the religions, languages and culture of India. The children learnt about wedding customs in Sikh and Hindu weddings, demonstrations of how to wear a Sari and some regional dances including the Dandiya (stick dance).

Cultural Participation
The ladies have performed Gerba - a traditional folk dance - at several community events, including Botleigh Carnival. Members have also organised picnics in different venues in Hampshire, such as the New Forest, Queen Victoria Country Park, and Milford-on-Sea. Additionally, many of the members went on a visit to Hilliers Garden Centre in Romsey, to learn more about flora, fauna and wildlife, which was organised by Hampshire County Council Walk on the Wildside Project.

Health Walks
Members have also taken part in a regular programme of organised walks, which was led by an Active Lifestyles instructor from Fleming Park. Each week the participants went on a 20 - 40 minute health walk at different locations in the Borough, which included Eastleigh Lakeside and Royal Victoria Country Park. Several of the members have now become qualified walks leaders and are now able to take the members out on organised walks.

Visits from different organisations and Services
Various external agencies have visited our group to offer advice and information on a variety of issues, such as: Social Services, Mind, Safety at Home, Digital Switchover, The Police amongst many more.

The Association has close working liaison with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service. HFRS HQ has been a venue for various celebrations and functions. We have also linked closely with Hampshire County Council and Eastleigh Borough Council, whose support has been invaluable in terms of advice, training and help with our prize event, the Eastleigh Mela. In addition to this, we have worked closely with the Point in Eastleigh and their collaborative support in staging our Mela has been greatly valued.

Our membership is growing along with the range of activities on offer. In 2010 we became a registered charity. None of this would be possible without the help of a team of dedicated volunteers who give up some of their time in moving our organisation forward and promoting diverse cultural values to the population of Eastleigh.
